This will override the vanilla recruit troops at villages and town,this way you can find recruit and upgrade your own troops The difference is that in-game this will override everything in the vanilla troop tree and show only the troops specified as upgrades

You can take the vanilla recruit troop of your chosen kingdom and follow the same steps as before.

To add an extra custom troop to the roster, find the vanilla troop you wish to upgrade copy it in your xml and add your custom troop as an upgrade.
